Devastating Effects of Chondrodysplasia
Chondro bred into standard highlands does NOT alter the standard sized genetics.Β Β
Chondrodysplasia is a dwarf gene. It does not effect the body size or weight. It effects leg length. Introducing chondro into standard sized highlands has become the get rich shortcut which has had devastating effects. Standard genetic highlands have a weight and frame size that are too large for dwarf legs and joints. They will break down. Do not blame the gene for this. Blame the breeder who uses the gene inappropriately in order to make a fast buck.Β Β
Standard genetic highlands with the chondro gene will be huge dwarfs. Chondro will not decrease the body size of the bovine. It only decreases the leg length. Standard genetics chondro positive highlands will have the same weight and length of a standard highland. Few buyers expect their βmini highlandβ cow to end up weighing 1000+ pounds or their bull to weigh 1500-2000 pounds.Β Β
*When chondro is introduced to standard genetic highlands, the standard genetics infiltrate this fledgling breed. This is diluting the extremely limited true miniature genetics and making it increasingly unlikely that miniature highlands will ever become a separate breed of cattle.Β Β
Chondrodysplasia is the icing on the cake. It is not the cake. It should only be used AFTER the genetic size of highlands has been reduced to mini size, NOT as a short cutΒ Β
Every standard genetics highland that makes it into the βmini highland β breeding pool reduces the chance of mini highlands ever becoming a breed. Mini highlands desperately need people who will act as caretakers, to protect them from the damage done by those whose goal is profit above all else
